Petteri, who has been the vice-chair of WENRA since 2014, said: “It is a privilege to assume the role of Chair of WENRA. At the same time, a changing operating environment places increasing expectations on regulatory authorities to deliver effective and impactful co-operation. As Chair, my focus will be on further developing regulatory cooperation within WENRA, and on dialogue with relevant stakeholders, to support national authorities in delivering their responsibilities — for both new and operating installations — while fully maintaining safety as our common foundation.”
Petteri succeeds Mark Foy, who has served as WENRA Chair since 2023, and stepped down alongside his retirement from the nuclear industry. Reflecting on his tenure, Mark said: "It has been an honour to be the Chair of WENRA over the last few years in its mission to improve and harmonise nuclear safety. Leading the collective group of national nuclear regulators across Europe, in their collaborative effort to tackle the important nuclear safety topics that are part of the dynamic environment now faced by the nuclear industry and national regulators, has been an important part of my role. I am pleased to be handing over to Petteri Tiippana, the capable and highly respected Director General of Finland's National regulatory body, STUK. Under Petteri's leadership, WENRA will continue to play an important role in global nuclear safety, at time of growth and challenge in the industry."
WENRA looks forward to continuing its work to enhance nuclear safety and regulatory harmonisation across Europe under Petteri’s leadership.
WENRA brings together senior nuclear regulators from across Europe, providing a respected platform for collaboration, consistency, and the collective advancement of nuclear safety.
