The WENRA Working Group on Research Reactors (WGRR) met virtually from 10 to 13 May 2022.

The WENRA Working Group on Research Reactors (WGRR) met virtually from 10 to 13 May 2022. The main topic for discussion was the on-going benchmarking (self-assessment and peer review) of the national regulation against the Safety Reference Levels (SRLs) for Research Reactors (RR) that were issued in 2020. For this, the group split up in subgroup to discuss in detail results of the benchmarking.

The group also looked at the transition of issue S1 to SV2 and T3 to TU4 in the SRLs for Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) and discussed if and how this transition can be integrated in the SRLs for RRs. Furthermore the group assessed the RHWG guidance on design extension of existing reactors and on natural hazards, and their applicability to research reactors. As part of the “special topics” agenda item, Slovenia shared its experiences and lessons learned on the 2010 fire event at the TRIGA research reactor in Ljubljana (Slovenia).

1.    Issue S (RR): Protection against Internal Fires
2.    Issue SV (NPP): Internal Hazards
3.    Issue T (RR): Natural Hazards
4.    Issue TU (NPPs): External Hazards
